Recently I got arms that are missing from over twenty-five years. I was lucky enough to stay in a room with a splendid view over the medieval village, its beautiful castle and the homonymous crater lake.
remember that in my previous stay at the end of a training pretty hard, along with the comrades of that adventure, rent a castle for a party that I remember perfectly.
The Castle of Bracciano, located on the shores of the lake is a beautiful feudal residence built in the years 1470 to 1481 Napoleon Orsini is a jewel of military fifteenth century, belonging to the period of transition between the medieval fortress and the austere baronial buildings. Over time, the castle has often been the subject of disputes between the noble Roman families, and passed under the control of Odescalchi, the Orsini, the Torlonia, then return again to the Odescalchi. Many famous people housed in the mansion, among others, King Charles VIII in 1494 in France march on Rome. That incident led to the excommunication of the Pope Alexander VI gave to the family of Orsini.
The castle now presents itself with strong tufa stone and flint walls with two rows of windows cross, flanked by six strong towers while on the south side there is a third type of rectangular windows.
Below a cordon around the cliffs overhanging boundary and the top is crowned by elegant castle battlements. Inside incorporates important remains of the original castle of Vico.
Two sturdy walled irregular shaped surround the castle.
Today the castle is a museum town of Bracciano, but is also used as a venue for conventions and events.
The castle has number of rooms: from that in 1478 Pope Sixtus IV was home, fleeing from the plague that afflicted Rome, to the room of Pisanello named for the presence of paintings similar to the style eponymous painter.
Frescoes similar repeat in the upstairs room of Hercules, in this and the next room is preserved a collection of weapons Odescalchi family with specimens from the fourteenth century.
A curiosity: among the weapons are kept, "Mercy", the daggers that were used to give the final blow to the enemy without suffering too much to do ... an act of genuine humanity.
is very beautiful walk on the walkways with beautiful view on the lake below.
Obviously there had to be legends around this castle.
Isabella de Medici, wife of Paolo Giordano Orsini received his many fans in the "Red Room" In the morning the unfortunate were taken out through a dark corridor, hiding in a hole which they had placed razor-sharp blades that, together the lime on the bottom, erased all traces of adultery. Paul was still aware of little habits "decent" of strangling his wife and would kill her with a silk ribbon (raffinato!). Many people swear that the ghost of Isabella roams from time to time on the shores of the lake.
More news and information on opening hours and various initiatives can be found on official website the castle.
Best wishes.
